Swimming pools are often the summer destination for those who cannot afford the luxury of tropical beaches and islands. Swimming pools give a refreshing feeling while having fun under the sun. As summer quickly approaches on other parts of the world, it is the best way to cool off the heat and make it a bonding moment for family and friends as well.

But, have you wondered about where the largest swimming pool on Earth is built? Well, worry no more and find out which is the largest swimming pool in the world and where it can be found.

The world’s largest swimming pool can be found at the San Alfonso del Mar resort in Chile.

The outdoor swimming pool is 1.013 kilometer and covers about 20 acres. It contains 250 million liters of seawater and has a depth of 35 meters.

The water is pumped and filtered from the Pacific Ocean where the pool faces. San Alfonso del Mar resort is a private resort in Algarrobo, Chile about 100 kilometers west of Santiago, the capital of the country.

The entire pool’s filtration and the suction system are controlled by a computer and water from the ocean is sucked at one end and pumped out of the other. The yearly cost for maintaining the pool costs around 4 million US dollars. The pool was developed by Fernando Fischmann and his company ‘Crystal Lagoons‘.

The resort opened in December of 2006. The filtration system costs around 3.5 million dollars alone. The total construction costs of the pool are estimated at around 1.5 billion dollars.

The water in the pool is warmed by the sun to around 26C and is nine degrees higher than the average sea temperature. One can enjoy different water activities while inside the pool such as kayaking and even sailing. And if the swimming pool is not enough, one can enjoy the crystal clear blue waters of the beach just outside the pool.

The world’s largest outdoor swimming pool not only holds the record for being the biggest in the world but it also holds the record for being the deepest swimming pool as well with 115 feet in depth.

In fact, the swimming pool is larger than 20 Olympic-size pools and holds around 66 million gallons of water. It is six times bigger than the next largest swimming pool in the world which is the Ortlieb Pool in Casablanca, Morocco.

The Ortlieb Pool covers around 8.9 acres and is 480 meters long and 75 meters wide which is not even close to the size of the gigantic pool found in Algarrobo, Chile.

What Do I Think

So, the next time you want to have a vacation, why not try to get to Chile and sign up for a trip to the world’s largest outdoor pool and enjoy the sunshine and the water activities you can do with the pool. Surely, there are countless ways to enjoy the sun and the summer when you are at the San Alfonso del Mar in Algarrobo, Chile.
